One man died and another was seriously injured in a “serious collision” this afternoon (October 17).

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene after two electrical engineers working on the roadway were seriously injured.

A second man in his 20s was taken to hospital in serious condition.

Police and firefighters on site

Initial investigations established that a vehicle had pulled off the road and collided with the victims, GMP said.

No arrests were made.

Emergency services were on the scene all day, including an air ambulance which was rushed towards the crash because “workers were trapped under a car,” witnesses said.

A vehicle is said to have entered a ditch during the incident.

About 2,000 homes in the area are said to be without power after Electricity North West cut power for “safety reasons” while supporting emergency services.

GMP Tactical Commander Superintendent Arif Nawaz said: “It was a terrible incident and our hearts go out to the family and friends who have lost a loved one in tragic circumstances.

“As a result of this incident, approximately 2,000 homes and businesses in the region were without power for approximately four hours and a major emergency response was declared.”
