Lapid says Israel will not be used as route by Russia to circumvent sanctions

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid says Israel will not be used by Russia to circumvent Western sanctions after Moscow invaded Ukraine and that his ministry is coordinating with officials on the issue .

“Israel will not be a way around the sanctions imposed on Russia by the United States and other Western countries,” he said.

“The Foreign Ministry is coordinating the issue with partners such as the Bank of Israel, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Economy, Airports Authority, Ministry of Energy and others,” Lapid said.

Lapid makes the comments in Bratislava, speaking alongside his Slovak counterpart Ivan Korčok.

Lapid also highlights Israel’s humanitarian work and diplomatic efforts, repeating his assertion that there is “no justification” for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its attacks on civilians.

“Israel, like Slovakia, condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine and calls for an end to the fighting. There is no justification for violating the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and there is no justification for attacks against a civilian population,” Lapid said.

“Israel will do everything in its power to help the mediation efforts, to stop the shooting and restore peace. We are working with our greatest ally, the United States, and our European friends to prevent this tragedy from continuing,” he said.

Lapid is on a trip that took him to Romania ahead of Slovakia, two countries bordering Ukraine, for talks with their leaders on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as well as bilateral relations with Israel.

Israel is coming under increasing pressure for its failure to impose sanctions amid reports of increasing numbers of private jets arriving at Ben Gurion Airport from Russia.

US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland said Friday that Israel should accept Western sanctions and ban Russian oligarchs. “You don’t want to become the last refuge for the dirty money that fuels Putin’s wars,” Nuland said.
